For years, we didn’t travel. Not because we didn’t want to — we loved the idea of it — but because we were scared. Scared that traveling with young kids would be one long hassle. Scared that something would go wrong, that the trip wouldn’t look anything like what we’d pictured, that we’d spend more time managing chaos than actually enjoying ourselves. So we kept putting it off. Year after year, “maybe next time.”

The trip that changed everything was Japan — our first whole-family overseas trip beyond Singapore, and the first time all of us flew together as a family. We spent almost a full year researching before we went. Every question we could think of, we tried to answer in advance: what to pack, where to pray, what our kids could actually handle, what could go wrong and how to plan around it.
And here’s the thing — it was a headache at first. Planning that much for a first big trip genuinely is. But once we were there, doing it, we realized something simple: it wasn’t nearly as scary or as hard as we’d built it up to be in our heads. We survived the flight. We survived the jet lag, the language barrier, the meals, the meltdowns. And more than surviving — we had a genuinely good trip.
That trip gave us more than good memories. It opened our kids’ eyes to a world bigger than Malaysia — different cultures, different ways of living, a sense that the world is large and worth exploring rather than something to be nervous about. And it changed how we saw travel too: not something to fear, but something to prepare for, and something absolutely worth doing.
We started Muslim Family Wanders because we know we’re not the only family who felt this way. There are so many families out there right now, sitting exactly where we used to sit — wanting to travel, but held back by the same fears we had. We want to be the resource we wish we’d had: real experiences, real tips, the research we did so you don’t have to start from zero.
Whether you’re planning your first big trip or your fifth, we hope this blog can be right there next to you — before the trip, during the packing chaos, and on the ground when things inevitably don’t go exactly to plan (they never do, and that’s okay).
